  • Latin name: Strelitzia reginae
  • Danish names: Paradisfugleblomst
  • English names: Bird of paradise, crane flower

Strelitzia reginae is undoubtedly the most well-known and beloved species in the bird of paradise genus. With its spectacular orange and blue flowers, it has become a symbol of exotic gardens, conservatories, and tropical plants worldwide.

The species originates from South Africa, where it grows in areas with warm summers and mild winters. There, it forms dense clumps of sturdy, evergreen leaves that resemble small banana leaves. Even without flowers, the plant is highly decorative and adds an exotic touch to greenhouses, conservatories, and patios alike.

The flowers are among the most distinctive in the plant kingdom. The orange sepals and blue petals together form a shape that resembles the head of a tropical bird in flight, which has given the plant its name, bird of paradise.

Compared to the massive Strelitzia nicolai, Strelitzia reginae remains significantly more compact and is therefore easier to grow in pots. While Strelitzia alba and Strelitzia nicolai have white flowers, it is precisely the vibrant orange and blue colors that have made Strelitzia reginae world-famous. The rare Strelitzia juncea shares the flower colors but features rush-like leaves instead.

Among collectors, there is also great interest in special forms such as Strelitzia reginae 'Mandela's Gold' with golden-yellow flowers and Strelitzia reginae 'Dwarf', which has a more compact growth habit.

Cultivation and requirements

Strelitzia reginae thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and prefers:

  • Well-drained and nutrient-rich soil (we recommend our Calathea & Maranta soil)
  • Even watering during the growing season
  • Good air circulation
  • Warm and bright conditions

A well-drained Mediterranean or tropical plant soil is ideal for cultivation. For optimal growth, an organic fertilizer can be used throughout the growing season.

The species tolerates brief, light frost, but in Denmark, it is best grown as a potted plant, greenhouse plant, or conservatory plant. In winter, it should be kept in a bright, frost-free location.

The more light the plant receives, the better its growth will develop and the higher the likelihood of flowering on older plants.

Growing from seeds

Seeds of Strelitzia reginae germinate best under warm conditions. For best results, we recommend:

  • First, remove the orange "tuft"
  • Soak in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours
  • Sow in a well-drained soil mix
  • A temperature of 22–28 °C
  • Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet

Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, though some seeds may take longer. The young plants grow moderately and gradually develop their characteristic leaves.

It requires patience to grow bird of paradise plants from seeds, but the reward is one of the world’s most spectacular flowering plants.

Utility and collector value

Strelitzia reginae is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant. Its iconic flowers have made it one of the world’s most popular exotic plants, both among beginners and experienced collectors.

The plant is also an excellent container plant, which over time can become an impressive centerpiece in a conservatory, greenhouse, or on a patio.

For many plant lovers, the bird of paradise is the very definition of a tropical flowering plant – elegant, exotic, and timeless.

Strelitzia reginae is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow the original bird of paradise from seed – a classic species with spectacular flowers, tropical character, and high collector value.
