RARE
- Latin name: Dracaena aletriformis
- Danish names: South African dragon tree
- English names: Large-leaved dragon tree, forest dracaena
Dracaena aletriformis is a rare and graceful dragon tree from the humid forests of South Africa. Unlike its better-known relative, Dracaena draco – the famous dragon tree from the Canary Islands – D. aletriformis grows naturally in shady forest areas and has a softer, more elegant appearance with long, narrow, and glossy leaves in shades of deep green. Where D. draco exudes desert and strength, D. aletriformis expresses the tranquility and tropical freshness of the forest.
The plant develops a slender, upright stem that can branch out over time. Each branch ends in a rosette of leathery, curved leaves with slightly wavy edges. In nature, it can reach 3–6 meters in height, but in pot culture, it remains far more compact and easy to handle.
Cultivation and requirements:
Dracaena aletriformis thrives in partial shade to bright positions, but without direct, harsh sunlight. It prefers an airy, well-drained potting soil with a little perlite or coconut fiber so that excess water can easily drain away.
Water moderately – the soil should dry out slightly between waterings, but the plant appreciates a bit of humidity. It tolerates short periods of drought, but not cold, and should be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location at a minimum of 15 °C.
As a forest-dwelling species, it is well-suited for indoor cultivation, where it creates a tropical, green expression with relatively low light requirements and minimal care.
Cultivation from seed:
The seeds are sown in a light, moist, and well-drained seed mix and covered only lightly. Keep the temperature at 22–28 °C, and germination will typically occur within 4–8 weeks. The small plants quickly develop their characteristic, narrow leaves.
Utility:
In its homeland, Dracaena aletriformis has had traditional uses in local medicine, but today it is grown primarily as a decorative ornamental plant. It is excellently suited for conservatories and living rooms, where its shape and color bring an exotic and calm touch.
Dracaena aletriformis is the natural choice for those who love the shape and character of the dragon tree but want a more tropical and softer version – an elegant, green contrast to the rugged D. draco.
