EASY TO GERMINATE
- Latin name: Tamarindus indica
-
Danish names: Tamarind
- English names: Tamarind, tamarind tree
Tamarindus indica is a tropical tree known for its characteristic pods containing a tart-sweet pulp, which is used in cuisines worldwide. The species is originally from Africa but has been cultivated for centuries in India and the rest of Asia, where it is now an important part of both food culture and the landscape.
The tree develops a broad, dense crown and fine, feathery pinnate leaves, which provide a light and elegant appearance. In warm climates, it can become a large tree, but in pot culture, it is kept more compact. The small, yellow-red flowers are followed by oblong pods containing the well-known pulp.
The flavor is complex, balancing between tart and sweet, making tamarind an important ingredient in chutneys, sauces, drinks, and desserts, among other things.
Cultivation and requirements
Tamarindus indica thrives best in full sun and prefers:
- well-drained, preferably slightly sandy soil
- moderate watering
- warm and stable temperatures
The plant is suitable for well-drained potting soil with a mineral content. During the growing season, it is advantageous to apply an organic fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
The species is not frost-tolerant and is grown in Denmark as a potted plant, which can be kept outdoors during the summer months and overwintered in a bright, frost-free location. The temperature should preferably be kept above 12–15 °C.
The tree is relatively drought-tolerant once established, but young plants benefit from consistent watering.
Cultivation from seeds
Seeds of Tamarindus indica are usually relatively easy to germinate under warm conditions. For best results, we recommend:
- soaking in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours
- sowing in a well-drained soil mix
- a temperature of 22–28 °C
- keeping the soil evenly moist, but not wet
Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks. The young plants grow relatively quickly and develop their characteristic fine leaves early on.
Utility and collector value
Tamarindus indica is an important utility plant globally and is used widely in cooking, especially in Asian, Middle Eastern, and South American cuisine. The pulp is known for its intense flavor and is used in everything from sauces and marinades to beverages.
In Denmark, the plant is grown primarily as an ornamental and collector's plant, where the fine foliage and tropical growth make it a decorative feature.
Although it requires warmth and time to achieve fruit set, it is an exciting experience to grow your own tamarind entirely from seed.
Tamarindus indica is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow an exotic and useful tree from seed – a species with both culinary significance and tropical charm.
