  • Latin name: Agave tequilana
  • Danish names: Blå agave, tequila-agave, Tequila agave
  • English names: Blue agave, tequila agave

Agave tequilana is the famous blue agave from Mexico, known as the species traditionally used for the production of tequila. The plant originates from dry and sunny areas in western Mexico and is particularly prized for its beautiful, symmetrical rosette of blue-grey, sturdy leaves, which give it a striking and sculptural appearance.

The leaves are stiff, succulent, and provided with both sharp marginal teeth and a strong terminal spine. Like other agaves, Agave tequilana grows slowly and stores water in its leaves, making it extremely drought-tolerant. When the plant reaches maturity after many years, it blooms once with a tall, impressive flower stalk and then dies after producing seeds or offsets.

Compared to many other agaves, Agave tequilana often has a more elegant and relatively open rosette and a characteristic bluish hue, which makes it especially attractive as an ornamental plant.

Cultivation and requirements

Agave tequilana thrives best in full sun and prefers:

  • very well-drained, preferably sandy or mineral-rich soil
  • sparse watering
  • dry and warm conditions
  • light fertilization with organic cactus fertilizer

The plant is best suited for cultivation in a pot, container, greenhouse, or conservatory in Denmark. It can tolerate slight coolness for short periods but is not reliably hardy under Danish winter conditions, especially not in combination with moisture. It should therefore be overwintered in a bright, cool, and frost-free place.

As with other agaves, it is important to avoid constantly moist soil, especially in the winter months, when too much moisture can quickly lead to rot.

Cultivation from seed

Seeds of Agave tequilana are usually relatively easy to sow in warm and bright conditions. For best results, we recommend:

  • sowing in a light, very well-drained, and mineral-based soil mix
  • only light covering of the seeds
  • temperature of 20–25 °C
  • slight moisture during germination, without the soil becoming wet

Germination often occurs within 1-2 months. The young plants develop small, succulent leaves early on and grow slowly but steadily. Seedlings should have plenty of light and gradually be accustomed to more direct sun.

Utility and collector value

Agave tequilana has great cultural and economic importance, as it is this species that lies behind the production of tequila. When grown from seed in Denmark, however, the focus is primarily on the plant's ornamental value and interest for collectors.

The blue color, the beautiful rosette shape, and the close connection to Mexican culture make it an obvious choice for collectors of succulents, desert plants, and architectural species. It is also an exciting choice for those who wish to grow a well-known utility plant in ornamental form.

Agave tequilana is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow an iconic and sculptural succulent from seed – a species full of character with botanical, cultural, and decorative value.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a fine layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.
