Live sphagnum moss that we have grown ourselves.

Live Sphagnum moss is an essential component of raised bogs and is the very plant that decomposes to form peat. Many plant enthusiasts use Sphagnum moss in their bog gardens, as a top layer in pots with carnivorous plants, or as a growing medium for other plants. It is also ideal for terrariums and as a substrate for amphibians. Finely chopped, it works excellently as a starter for cuttings and seeds. Sphagnum moss is often added to soil mixes to improve moisture retention and create a looser, more porous soil structure.

This variety can show different colors ranging from green to brown and red, but is predominantly light green.

Sphagnum moss is a primitive bryophyte, similar to ferns and clubmosses. Unlike more common moss species, such as lawn or forest moss, Sphagnum moss is larger and requires very moist growing conditions. It thrives best in shady areas of the raised bog, where it often grows among other bog plants. It is easy to recognize by its light green color, clumping growth habit, and preference for wet areas. It is a fast-growing plant that clumps nicely and thrives well alongside carnivorous plants such as Venus Flytrap, Sundew, and Pitcher Plant. When grown together with these plants, it often requires frequent pruning.

Although Sphagnum moss does not have roots and does not require soil, it benefits from being planted in a loose carnivorous plant soil. It is winter-hardy and is a popular building material for birds and squirrels building nests in the spring.

Live Sphagnum moss is sold in small containers of approximately 9 x 20 x 5cm, enough to cover a 10 cm pot. Delivered without soil.

  • For optimal care, we recommend watering with rainwater or distilled water.
