EXTREMELY RARE | WORLD'S LARGEST FLOWER

  • Latin name: Amorphophallus titanum
  • Danish names: Kæmpebæg, titanarum, titan arum, corpse flower
  • English names: Titan arum, corpse flower

Success at last!!! A rarity in Denmark.

Amorphophallus titanum is without a doubt the most famous of all Amorphophallus species – and one of the most spectacular plants in the world. It originates from the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and is known for producing the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. It is rare and endangered in the wild, and in cultivation, it is a collector's item on par with the most sought-after exotic plants.

Appearance and growth

The corm is enormous and can weigh over 70 kg in the wild, making it one of the largest corms of any plant. From the corm grows either a single, gigantic leaf or an inflorescence in alternating cycles. The leaf can resemble a small tree with a mottled stalk and an umbrella-shaped crown that can reach several meters in height.

The inflorescence is legendary: a large, green outer spathe with a deep purple interior, surrounding a central, yellow to brown spadix. During flowering, the plant emits an intense odor of rotting meat, which attracts pollinators in the wild – hence the name "corpse flower." Flowering is rare and can occur years apart.

Use

Amorphophallus titanum is not grown for edible purposes, but exclusively as an ornamental and collector's plant. It is famous for its size, its rarity, and its dramatic flowering, which often attracts thousands of visitors to botanical gardens worldwide. For private collectors, it is a highlight of any aroid collection.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Partial shade or filtered light – it cannot tolerate harsh, direct sun.
  • Temperature: Requires warmth (20–30 °C) and high humidity. Does not tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich, moisture-retaining soil.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. The soil should be slightly moist, never soaking wet.
  • Fertilizer: A large corm requires a lot of nutrients – fertilize regularly during the growing season with a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.
  • Wintering: When the leaf dies back, the corm enters dormancy. Significantly reduce watering and keep the corm dry and warm until the next growth cycle begins.

Amorphophallus titanum is not just a plant – it is a botanical icon. For the dedicated collector, it is the crown jewel: a rare, demanding, and truly unforgettable giant that inspires fascination and admiration, wherever it is grown.
