THE LARGEST OF ALL ALOE SPECIES

  • Latin name: Aloe barberae (syn. Aloe bainesii)
  • Danish names: Træ aloe, træaloe
  • English names: Tree aloe

Aloe barberae is one of the most majestic succulents in the world and the largest of all aloe species. It originates from South Africa and Mozambique, where it can form impressive trees up to 15–18 meters tall in the wild. With its sculptural growth and dramatic form, it is a true ornamental tree for both botanical gardens and private collections.

The plant develops a strong, branched trunk and a crown of long, slender, green leaves that curve elegantly outwards. The glossy leaves are less fleshy than those of many other aloe species, giving the tree a light and tropical look. During the flowering season, Aloe barberae produces large, upright inflorescences with tubular flowers in shades of orange to pink, which attract birds and insects.

Cultivation and requirements:

Aloe barberae is a fast-growing species under the right conditions and requires plenty of light, warmth, and well-drained soil. It thrives in large pots or directly in the ground in warm climates. In Denmark, it should be grown in pots that can be moved outside in summer and overwintered in a bright, frost-free location at a minimum of 10 °C.

The plant is drought-tolerant, but should be watered regularly during the growing season and kept almost completely dry in winter. It can tolerate temperatures down to around 0 °C for short periods, but should be protected from frost to avoid damage.

Cultivation from seed:

Sow the seeds in a well-drained soil mixture of sand, perlite, and a little peat or coconut coir. A good alternative is specialized soil for cacti and succulents. The seeds should only be lightly covered and kept moist at 20–25 °C. Germination usually occurs within 2–4 weeks. The small plants grow relatively quickly and soon develop the characteristic aloe shape.

Utility:

In its native homeland, Aloe barberae has had both medicinal and practical uses, but today its greatest value is ornamental. It is used in landscape design all over the world as an impressive specimen tree, and even in pot culture, it provides a dramatic, exotic look.

Aloe barberae is the perfect plant for collectors and enthusiasts who want one of the most impressive and iconic succulents in their collection – a true giant among aloe species.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.
