  • Latin name: Philodendron bipinnatifidum
  • Danish names: Tree philodendron (also used for related species), philodendron
  • English names: Lacy tree philodendron, split-leaf philodendron

Philodendron bipinnatifidum is a large and striking philodendron from the subtropical and tropical regions of South America, where it grows on the forest floor or as a semi-upright plant in open forest areas. It is known for its very large, deeply lobed leaves, which give the plant a powerful and lush appearance often associated with classic tropical vegetation.

The leaves can grow to over a meter long on older plants and are deeply incised with broad, rounded lobes. They sit on strong petioles that give the plant an almost palm-like appearance. Unlike many climbing philodendrons, Philodendron bipinnatifidum eventually forms an independent, upright growth habit with a short, sturdy trunk and aerial roots at the base.

Cultivation and requirements:

Philodendron bipinnatifidum thrives best in a bright location without direct, harsh sun, but also tolerates light partial shade. It prefers:

  • Airy, well-drained soil, e.g., an aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coconut fibers
  • Even watering during the growing season, without the soil becoming waterlogged
  • Moderate to high humidity
  • Temperatures above 15 °C

The plant is not frost-tolerant and is grown in Denmark as an indoor plant, in a conservatory, or in a greenhouse. It can advantageously be placed outdoors during the summer months in a warm and sheltered spot.

Growing from seed:

The seeds are sown in a light, moist, and well-drained seed mix and covered only very lightly. They germinate best at 22–28 °C and high humidity. Germination typically takes 2–6 weeks. Young plants initially have more entire leaves, which gradually develop the characteristic deep lobes as the plant matures.

Utility:

Philodendron bipinnatifidum is grown exclusively as an ornamental plant and is valued for its dramatic foliage and robust growth. It is particularly suitable as a specimen plant in larger rooms, where it can have space to spread out and create a distinct tropical focal point.

Philodendron bipinnatifidum is an obvious choice for those who want a classic, large-leaved philodendron with plenty of character – a strong and decorative plant that provides an instant jungle feel in the home or conservatory. 🌿

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp kitchen paper, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil. We use our own Aroid mix for this plant.

- Place in bright, indirect sunlight
- Keep moist, but the soil can be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Enjoys light misting with lime-free water
