- Latin name: Dionaea muscipula
- Danish names: Venus fluefanger, fluefanger
- English names: Venus flytrap, flytrap
Note: The plants are currently preparing for autumn and winter. This means that the long summer leaves/traps will begin to wither and be replaced by smaller autumn leaves/traps. It is therefore completely normal if some of the traps begin to wither now.
The Venus flytrap is arguably the best-known and most popular of all carnivorous plants!
The plant originates from the Southeastern USA, where it lives in moist boggy areas with a low pH (acidic). Upon contact, the leaves can snap shut around their prey (usually small insects). They are then trapped and slowly broken down. Where the plants naturally live, there is almost no nutrition. Therefore, the plant has evolved to be able to catch small animals and absorb nutrients through them.
Hundreds of different varieties of Venus flytrap have been bred. In this case, we are dealing with the normal (typical) variety.
