EXTREMELY RARE

  • Latin name: Mangifera griffithii
  • Danish names: Vild mango, Griffiths mango
  • English names: Wild mango, Horsfield’s mango

Mangifera griffithii is a rare and exotic relative of the mango, native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia – particularly Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. This species is not yet common in cultivation, making it a unique opportunity for the collector who wants something out of the ordinary.

Unlike the common mango (Mangifera indica), M. griffithii is a smaller and more compact species with decorative leaves and small, oval fruits that ripen to a beautiful orange or reddish color. The fruits have a sweet and aromatic flavor and are eaten locally – often fresh or in traditional dishes.

Appearance and growth

The tree has a beautiful, upright growth habit and dark green, glossy leaves. It grows more slowly than the common mango and is therefore well-suited for cultivation in large pots, a greenhouse, or a tropical garden. The small fruits hang in clusters and are edible when ripe.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade – requires light to grow optimally.

  • Temperature: Thrives best in tropical or subtropical conditions (20–35 °C). Does not tolerate frost.

  • Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic, and nutrient-rich soil.

  • Watering: Water regularly, but avoid standing water. The tree prefers consistent moisture.

  • Fertilizer: Fertilize with a balanced, tropical organic plant fertilizer during the growing season. No or very little fertilizer in winter.

  • Placement: Suitable for a greenhouse or conservatory in colder regions.

Mangifera griffithii is a rare tropical gem that combines decorative foliage, exciting fruits, and great botanical interest. Perfect for those who love exotic trees and are looking for a different mango species that few have in their collection.
