Tolerates light frost

  • Latin name: Aloe excelsa
  • Danish names: Zimbabwe aloe
  • English names: Zimbabwe aloe, mountain aloe

Aloe excelsa, also known as Zimbabwe aloe, is a robust and majestic aloe species that occurs naturally in the highlands of southern Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe and northern South Africa. It grows on rocky slopes and mountainsides, where it has adapted to a climate with hot summers and cool, dry winters.

This species forms a tall, solitary trunk, which can eventually reach up to 3 meters, and bears a compact, upright rosette of thick, gray-green leaves with prominent, dark red thorns along the leaf margins. The leaves often have a slight bluish waxy coating, which protects against intense sun and dehydration.

During the winter months, Aloe excelsa blooms with tall, upright inflorescences that bear dense, cylindrical flowers in warm shades of orange to red. The flowering is not only decorative but also attracts birds and pollinators in large numbers.

The plant thrives best in full sun and well-drained, mineral-rich soil. It is highly drought-tolerant and can withstand short periods of frost down to around -3 to -5 °C, especially if kept dry in winter. It is well-suited for cultivation as a solitary plant in larger gardens, rockeries, or large pots, where its impressive size and structure can be fully appreciated.

Aloe excelsa is ideal for those seeking a powerful and classic aloe with both architectural ornamental value and good hardiness. With its stately growth and beautiful winter flowering, it is a reliable and long-lived addition to any collection of drought-tolerant plants.

Seed germination
