  • Latin name: Strelitzia reginae

  • English names: Orange Bird of Paradise, Bird of Paradise

Strelitzia reginae, better known as the bird of paradise flower, is one of the most iconic exotic plants. With its large, sturdy leaves and spectacular orange and blue flowers, it adds a distinct tropical touch to the home, greenhouse, or conservatory.

The species originates from South Africa, where it grows naturally in the eastern part of the country. It has since become a popular ornamental plant in large parts of the world and is grown both for its decorative foliage and the unique flowers that have given the plant its common name.

Appearance and growth

Strelitzia reginae forms strong, upright leaf stalks with large, oblong, and leathery leaves. The plant grows from underground rhizomes and gradually forms more shoots, so older plants can develop into dense and impressive clumps.

Under good conditions, the plant typically reaches about 1–2 meters in height. Compared to the related Strelitzia nicolai, which can eventually develop into a very large and almost tree-like plant, Strelitzia reginae remains considerably more compact and is therefore particularly well-suited for pot cultivation. Feel free to browse our entire collection of Strelitzia plants.

The characteristic bird of paradise flower

It is especially the flowering that has made Strelitzia reginae famous. The inflorescence consists of a boat-shaped spathe from which the bright orange sepals and intense blue petals unfold. The shape resembles the head of an exotic bird – hence the English name "bird of paradise."

Plants must reach a certain age and size before they start flowering. A seed-grown bird of paradise therefore requires patience, but the plant is decorative throughout its development, and an older plant in good lighting conditions can reward you with that spectacular bloom. Our seed-grown Strelitzia reginae, for example, flowers every year – so it is certainly possible.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Bird of paradise thrives best in very bright conditions and can be placed in direct sun once acclimated. Ample light is important for compact growth and subsequent flowering.

  • Temperature: Thrives well at normal warm temperatures during the growing season. The plant does not tolerate hard frost and should be overwintered frost-free.

  • Soil: Use nutrient-rich, but well-draining soil. An airy soil mixture helps prevent the strong roots from sitting in water. For example, you can mix perlite and clay into a good standard potting soil. Otherwise, we also recommend our ficus soil, which is well-suited for Strelitzia plants.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly during the growing season, but let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter.

  • Fertilizer: Strelitzia reginae is a vigorous plant and should be fertilized regularly throughout the growing season. Good access to nutrients helps the plant develop large leaves, a strong root system, and, in the long term, flowers. Use a good organic fertilizer for tropical plants.

  • Repotting: Young plants can be repotted as needed. Older plants thrive well with relatively limited space around the roots and therefore do not necessarily need a much larger pot every year.

  • Overwintering: Can be overwintered indoors in a bright location. A bright and slightly cooler winter spot combined with less water suits the plant well. It does not tolerate frost.

Strelitzia reginae as a houseplant

In Denmark, Strelitzia reginae is primarily grown as a houseplant or container plant. In the summer, it can advantageously be moved out to a warm terrace or placed in a greenhouse. Gradually acclimate the plant to direct sun if it has been kept indoors so the leaves do not get sunburned.

The large leaves may eventually develop occasional cracks and tears. This is a natural characteristic of Strelitzia and is also seen in plants in nature, where the leaves are affected by wind.

A classic among exotic plants

Strelitzia reginae is an obvious choice for those who want a distinct tropical look but also a plant that is relatively uncomplicated to grow. It is decorative even as a young plant, while older specimens can develop the fantastic orange and blue bird of paradise flowers that have made the species famous worldwide.

For those interested in Strelitzia, there are also several exciting species and varieties with different sizes, growth habits, and flowering. See our other Strelitzia and exotic plants and discover the variation within this fascinating plant genus.
